Clinical Application, Indications and Digital Application Value of Acrylic Denture Base

Oct 09, 2026

Full denture acrylic base is the preferred restorative solution for complete edentulism, especially suitable for elderly patients with stable oral soft tissue and moderate occlusal force. It shows excellent clinical adaptability for patients with atrophic alveolar ridges. Different from rigid metal base restorations that rely on hard support, the acrylic base achieves stable denture retention through tight mucosal fitting and edge sealing adsorption, which can well adapt to the uneven surface of atrophic alveolar ridges and effectively improve the stability of full dentures during speaking and chewing.

Clinically, acrylic base full dentures are widely applied in two mainstream production modes: traditional handcrafted dentures and modern monolithic 3D-printed full dentures. In digital denture manufacturing, the integrated printing of acrylic base and artificial teeth completely eliminates traditional adhesive bonding interfaces, fundamentally solving the common clinical pain point of tooth-base debonding and prosthesis failure, which greatly improves the overall structural integrity and durability of dentures.

Strict clinical contraindications should be followed in practical application. The acrylic base is not applicable for patients with confirmed acrylic resin allergy, severe unhealed oral mucosal inflammation and ulcers. Meanwhile, it is not recommended for patients with extremely thin alveolar mucosa that cannot bear base plate compression, as well as cases that prioritize implant-supported fixed restorations rather than removable dentures. Compared with metal base dentures, acrylic base restorations have obvious comprehensive advantages of light weight, superior aesthetics, convenient adjustment and cost-effectiveness, making them the most versatile and mainstream option in the global full denture restoration field.
