Unilateral CoCr Metal Framework Partial Denture

Oct 27, 2026

A unilateral cobalt-chromium (CoCr) metal framework partial denture is a type of custom removable partial denture (RPD). It is designed specifically for patients with missing teeth on only one side of the dental arch.

Unlike bilateral RPDs that span across the palate or mandible to connect both sides, the unilateral design does not use a cross-arch major connector. Its core structure is a cast cobalt-chromium alloy framework, fitted with precision clasps for retention on adjacent natural abutment teeth on the same side. Acrylic resin gingival base and artificial teeth are attached to the metal framework to restore missing dentition.

This restoration is widely used for Kennedy Class II cases, also known as unilateral free-end saddle, where posterior teeth are missing on one side.

Core Benefits of CoCr Metal Framework for Unilateral Removable Partial Dentures

Superior rigidity and fracture resistance Cobalt-chromium alloy features high flexural strength. It withstands normal chewing forces without bending, warping or breaking, which is critical for unilateral free-end cases prone to leverage movement.

Thin, low-bulk construction Compared with full-acrylic removable partials, the cast CoCr framework can be fabricated much thinner. It occupies less space in the oral cavity, improves speech and taste perception, and reduces irritation to gingival tissues.

Good biocompatibility & corrosion resistance Dental-grade CoCr alloy is stable in the moist oral environment, resistant to corrosion, and carries a low risk of allergic reactions for most patients. It does not produce persistent metallic taste.

Stable retention and controlled occlusal load distribution Custom clasps grip the abutment teeth securely. The rigid framework evenly distributes chewing pressure, reducing excessive stress on the alveolar ridge and remaining natural teeth.

Adjustable and repairable Polished metal clasps can be bent and adjusted by clinicians during fitting and follow-up visits. Artificial teeth or acrylic base can be added, relined or repaired when alveolar bone resorption occurs over time.

Cost-effective restorative solution It serves as an affordable alternative to implant-supported restorations or fixed bridges for patients who cannot receive those treatments due to bone deficiency, systemic health conditions or budget constraints.

Typical Clinical Indications

Unilateral posterior tooth loss, including unilateral free-end saddle (Kennedy Class II)

Multiple consecutive missing teeth on one side of upper or lower jaw, with suitable abutment teeth available for clasp retention

Patients unsuitable for implants or fixed bridges due to insufficient bone volume, medical contraindications or financial considerations

Cases requiring rigid framework support to minimize pressure on the residual ridge

Patients looking for a durable removable prosthesis instead of bulky full-acrylic partial dentures
