Classification of fixed retainers

1. Fixed lingual arch: Used for retention after changes in arch length or width have been corrected through orthodontic treatment.
2. Fixed lingual wire retainer: A fixed lingual wire connected between two canines can be directly bonded to the lingual protuberance of the canine. Primarily used for limited or permanent retention of the mandibular anterior teeth after orthodontic treatment, it is a commonly used retention method.
3. Prosthetic retainer: When tooth volume is less than bone volume, or when there is still a large gap in the dentition due to the loss of permanent teeth, or after auxiliary orthodontic treatment in adults, fixed or removable prostheses are generally required. These prostheses can be considered a type of permanent retainer.
