Introduction to Retainers

Jul 12, 2026

A retainer is a medical device used to consolidate the effects of orthodontic treatment and maintain teeth in their ideal position after correction. After the braces are removed, the teeth are not yet stable in their new positions and retainers need to be worn to maintain their position while the alveolar bone remodels.

Currently, the three most commonly used retainers in clinical practice are membrane retainers, Halley retainers, and lingual wire retainers. Wearing a retainer requires meeting conditions such as fit and comfort, and it should be worn as prescribed by the doctor. Initially, it usually needs to be worn all day, gradually reducing the time spent wearing it at night. Care should be taken to clean and maintain the retainer, avoiding contact with hot water, colored beverages, and biting hard objects.
