Introduction to bite splints

Occlusal splints are removable artificial occlusal devices used to treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Also known as occlusal braces or oral appliances, they alleviate TMD symptoms by adjusting jaw alignment. They are suitable for eliminating clicking sounds, reducing pain, treating bruxism, and assisting in orthodontic treatment. Types include protruding, stable, and relaxed types. Doctors select the appropriate type based on the patient's condition and combine it with jaw adjustment to determine the therapeutic jaw relationship for diagnosis and treatment.
Occlusal splint treatment requires regular follow-up appointments to adjust the splint's shape. After symptom relief, the wearing time should be gradually reduced, strictly following the doctor's instructions to avoid the risk of malocclusion. Later stages of treatment may involve grinding, restoration, or orthodontic procedures to consolidate the therapeutic effect. Digital occlusal splint technology can optimize the maxillofacial morphology design process, but its application still needs expansion. Some newer combination occlusal splints use silicone protective components and antibacterial pads to reduce oral mucosal damage and improve wearing comfort.
