CoCr PFM Bridge With Gingival Porcelain

Oct 19, 2026

CoCr PFM bridge with gingival porcelain is a fixed metal-ceramic dental prosthesis, designed for cases with gingival recession, alveolar bone loss or large interdental papilla defects. It adopts cobalt‑chromium alloy as the internal framework, layered tooth‑shade porcelain for crown restoration, and extra gingival porcelain applied at the cervical area to simulate natural gum tissue. Unlike conventional PFM bridges that only restore tooth structure, this design compensates soft tissue loss and fills black interdental gaps, delivering both functional recovery and natural gingival aesthetics.

The CoCr metal substructure provides outstanding rigidity and fracture resistance. Nickel‑free and beryllium‑free CoCr alloy features good corrosion resistance and low mucosal allergy risk, suitable for long‑term intraoral service. The stacked tooth porcelain mimics natural enamel color and translucency to restore tooth morphology and occlusion. The specially added gingival porcelain is tinted to match the patient's gum tone, covering exposed metal margins and filling embrasure spaces caused by receding gums. It effectively solves the "black triangle" issue between teeth, which is a common aesthetic complaint in cases with bone resorption.

Clinically, this restoration is mainly indicated for anterior or premolar multi‑unit missing teeth combined with obvious gingival atrophy. It is a preferred option when implant treatment is not feasible, or when patients want to hide metal margins and black interdental gaps. It can be fabricated from traditional stone models or intraoral scan STL files.

Nevertheless, there are clinical considerations for gingival porcelain PFM bridges. Gingival porcelain is prone to plaque accumulation, so patients must maintain strict daily oral hygiene. Over‑contoured gingival porcelain may irritate periodontal tissue. The technician needs to control the emergence profile precisely to keep the margin smooth and avoid gum inflammation. Compared with ordinary PFM bridges, it requires more complex porcelain layering work, raising lab production requirements.

Although full zirconia bridges are increasingly popular in aesthetic restoration, CoCr PFM bridge with gingival porcelain still holds irreplaceable clinical value. It combines high mechanical strength, affordable cost and customizable soft‑tissue simulation, offering a practical fixed prosthetic solution for patients with missing teeth and gingival tissue defects.
